Mardi Himal Trek is a wonderful trip in the Himalayan region of Nepal in the Annapurna area that features some wonderful views of the Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. The route traverses through the dense rhododendron forests, serene mountains and picturesque ridgelines to arrive at Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500 metres.

This 9-day Mardi Himal Trek starts from Kathmandu city and passes through Pokhara and beautiful villages and splendid alpine landscapes. What makes this trek special is the trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp, where you will see some breathtaking panoramic mountain views. The trek is somewhat challenging and picturesque, suitable for fit beginners as well as experienced walkers looking for an unforgettable trek in the Himalayas.

Why Choose the Mardi Himal Trek?

One of the most outstanding things about the Mardi Himal Trek is the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Himalayas from close range, with the chance to hike along the scenic ridges. The trail travels through the oak and rhododendron forests and eventually emerges onto grassy slopes and bare ridgelines under Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) as compared to trails which spend many hours in deep mountain valleys.

The views get more dramatic as you rise in altitude and you will be able to see the panoramic view of the Annapurna range. The trail started to become open to trekkers in 2012, and while the trail traffic fluctuates with the seasons, it’s also one of the less busy ways to reach Annapurna Base Camp.

Mountain Views Along the Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal trek is filled with a lot of amazing mountain views, one of the most prominent ones being around the upper ridge and Mardi Himal Base Camp. The highlight of the quarry is the peak of Machhapuchhre (6,993 metres) and Annapurna South (7,219 metres) and Hiunchuli (6,441 metres) in the surrounding skyline.

From time to time, the wider view might also feature Annapurna I (8,091 metres) and other mountains of the Annapurna massif, on clear days. The walk in the morning heading upwards to the upper viewpoint is a memorable way of watching the light change over the snow covered mountains.

Is the Mardi Himal Trek Right for You?

Our 9-day Mardi Himal Trek package combines travel between Kathmandu and Pokhara with five days of trekking, from Day 3 to Day 7 of the itinerary. Walking days range from approximately 3–4 hours at the beginning to around 8 hours for the climb to Mardi Himal Base Camp and the return to High Camp. Rated moderate, the trek does not require technical climbing skills, but you should be comfortable walking uphill for several hours over uneven mountain trails.

With a reasonable level of fitness, a steady pace, and the guide and porter support included in the package, it can be a rewarding option for fit first-time Himalayan trekkers as well as experienced hikers looking for a shorter adventure in the Annapurna region.

Mardi Himal Trek Highlights

  • Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Mardi Himal from various points along the trek.

Guided Mardi Himal Trek Information

The Guided Mardi Himal Trek offers a well-organized trekking experience, ensuring safety, comfort, and an enriching journey through the breathtaking Annapurna region. This package includes experienced guides, accommodation, meals, permits and transportation, so the trekking experience can be enjoyed without any logistical concerns. This trek passes through rich rhododendron forests, alpine meadows and high ridges and reaches Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) where you get a great view of the Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

Required Trekking Permits

For international visitors, two permits are compulsory to trek legally and safely in the Mardi Himal region. We take care of all of your paperwork and the application process before you leave:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): This entry permit is used to gain access to the protected Annapurna Conservation Area, which helps subsidize the conservation of the environment, upkeep of trails and sustainable tourism programs in the area.

  • Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) Card: The TIMS Card is managed by the Nepal Tourism Board and TAAN, which records trekker information, trek routes and contact numbers for safety monitoring and rescue operations.

Best Season for Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal is trekkable in many months of the year but the best time to enjoy a clear sky, cooler temperatures and more colourful trails to explore are during Nepal’s two main trekking seasons.

  • Spring Season (March to May): Highly recommended for blooming nature. The weather is comfortably warm down on the lower slopes and the forests are a splash of red, pink and white rhododendrons. Most mornings are cloudless, with great views.

  • Autumn Season (September to November): After the summer monsoon, the air is refreshed with ultra-sharp, crystal-clear panoramic views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South over bright blue skies with stable weather conditions.

  • Winter & Off-Season Note (December to February): Daytime trekking is crisp and clear, but High Camp nights during winter and off-season (December to February) are below freezing. For the more experienced trekkers with winter gear.

Altitude Sickness & Acclimatization Safety

Mardi Himal Base Camp is located at a height of 4500m (14763ft) above sea level. The air is thinner at this elevation, and it’s important to take your time to acclimate yourself and to walk slowly. We’ve designed our 9 day trek plan to help you climb steadily to aid in safer acclimatization.

  • Slow Ascent & Daily Height Gain: The trek starts at around 1,400 meters and climbs gradually to 4,500 meters. This gives your body more time to adjust to the lower oxygen levels.
  • Guide Care & Safety Checks: Our licensed guides have training in Wilderness First Aid and high-altitude safety. They check your pulse and blood oxygen levels each day using a small device called a pulse oximeter.
  • Water, Food & Emergency Support: We recommend drinking 3–4 liters of safe drinking water daily, eating well, and walking at a slow, steady pace (bistari). If a serious problem occurs, your guide can help arrange a helicopter evacuation. Please make sure your travel insurance covers emergency helicopter rescue at high altitudes.

FAQs

How long is Mardi Himal Trek?

The duration depends on your starting point and pace.

  • The “Standard” Route (5 Days): This is the most popular choice starting from Pokhara. It allows for a steady ascent to High Camp and a full morning to reach the Base Camp (4,500m) and descend comfortably.
  • The “Express” Route (3–4 Days): Possible for experienced hikers. You drive further to Siding or Kande and push longer hours.
  • The “Full Experience” (7–10 Days): Starts and ends in Kathmandu, often including a “rest day” in Pokhara or combining the trek with Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp (ABC).

Pro Tip: Always recommend the 5-day itinerary for better acclimatization; rushing this trek is the no 1 reason for altitude sickness.

Is the Mardi Himal Trek difficult?

It is physically demanding but technically “easy”:

  • Terrain: Unlike the ABC trek, which has thousands of stone stairs, Mardi Himal is a “ridge trek.” The paths are narrower and often run through thick forest or steep grassy slopes.
  • The “Crux”: The hardest part is the summit push from High Camp (3,580m) to Base Camp (4,500m). This section is steep, rocky, and can be slippery/icy.
  • Fitness Level: If you can walk 5–7 hours a day with a light pack, you can do this trek. No ropes or ice axes are required, but trekking poles are highly recommended for the knee-shredding descent.

How much does it cost to trek Mardi?

Costs vary based on the level of service:

  • Budget/Solo ($30 – $40 per day): If you go independently, you’ll spend roughly $10–$15 on a room and $20–$25 on food/water.
  • Standard All-Inclusive Package ($400 – $600): This usually includes a guide, porter, permits, food, and transport from Pokhara.
  • Premium Packages ($800+): Includes domestic flights (Kathmandu to Pokhara), 3-star hotels in the city, and higher-end lodges.
  • Mandatory Fixed Costs: * ACAP Permit: ~USD $25 (3,000 NPR).
  • TIMS Card: ~USD $17 (2,000 NPR).

Which month is best for the Mardi Trek?

Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November).

  • Autumn (Gold Standard): Mid-September to November offers the sharpest, clearest views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. The air is crisp and the weather is stable.
  • Spring (The Floral Route): March to May is famous for blooming Rhododendron forests. You may get some afternoon clouds, but the temperature is milder.
  • Winter (The Challenge): December to February offers solitude and stunning snow-covered trails, but you need professional cold-weather gear as temperatures drop to -10°C at High Camp.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. As of 2026, you require two specific documents. You can obtain these at the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

  • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit): ~3,000 NPR ($23 USD).

  • TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) Card: ~2,000 NPR ($15 USD).

Note: Since the 2023 regulations, the “Green” TIMS (for solo trekkers) has been phased out. You generally need to be registered through an agency to get a TIMS card.

Is a guide mandatory for * Mardi Himal trek?

Yes. Following the Nepal Tourism Board’s 2023 ruling, solo trekking in the Annapurna region is officially prohibited for foreign nationals. Beyond the legal requirement, a guide is vital for:

  • Navigation: The trail between High Camp and Base Camp can be shrouded in thick fog.

  • Safety: The ridgeline is narrow with steep drops on both sides.

  • Logistics: They pre-book rooms via phone, which is essential because Mardi Himal has fewer tea houses than the popular ABC trek.

What are Physical Requirements of Mardi Himal trek?

  • Age: No official limit. Children as young as 10 and seniors in their 70s have completed it.

  • Fitness: Moderate. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day on steep, uneven stairs.

  • Porter Weight: One porter typically carries 20–25kg total. If you are a duo, you share one porter and give them ~10kg of your gear each

What about Altitude Sickness (AMS)?

To prevent altitude sickness, follow the rule to “climb high, sleep low” by using High Camp (3,580m) as your base for a day trip to Base Camp (4,500m). If you experience a persistent headache, nausea, or loss of appetite, stop immediately and do not ascend further. Stay hydrated by drinking 4 liters of water daily, and consider eating garlic soup, a traditional local remedy believed to aid oxygenation and acclimatization.

Is travel insurance mandatory?

Travel insurance is not always legally mandatory, but for high-altitude travel it is essential and often required by tour operators. Coverage up to 5,000 m is important because medical facilities are limited at altitude and emergency evacuation is usually only possible by helicopter, which is very expensive without insurance. A suitable policy ensures you can receive urgent medical care and helicopter rescue if needed, allowing you to travel safely and participate in the trip without restrictions.

What if I get sick?

Guides carry basic first aid; however, for serious illness, helicopter evacuation is the only way out from High Camp.

Can I see Mount Everest from the Mardi Himal Trek?

No. You are in the Annapurna region. You will see Annapurna I (8,091m), the 10th highest peak, but Everest is far to the east. The star of the show here is the “unclimbed” Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

What is the difference between Viewpoint 1, Upper Viewpoint, and Base Camp?

Many trekkers stop at the Upper Viewpoint (4,200m) because the view of Fishtail is actually more dramatic there than at the actual Base Camp (4,500m), which is tucked closer into the mountain wall.

How does Mardi Himal compare to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek?

Mardi is shorter, less crowded, and higher in elevation at the top. However, ABC takes you into a “sanctuary” surrounded by a circle of peaks, whereas Mardi keeps you on a ridge looking at the peaks.

Is there phone signal on the trail?

Ncell and NTC both have spotty coverage. You will likely have signal at Forest Camp and High Camp, but expect “dead zones” in the dense forests between.

Can I do the trek in trail runners, or do I need boots?

During dry seasons (Oct/Nov), trail runners with good grip are fine. However, for the summit push or during Spring (snow/mud), high-ankle waterproof boots are essential for stability on the rocky ridge.

Are there hot showers available?

Yes, but they are usually “bucket showers” or gas-heated showers for a fee ($3–$5). Above Low Camp, it’s often too cold to shower comfortably anyway.

Is the Mardi Himal Trek safe for solo female travelers?

Yes, it is considered very safe. However, due to the narrow ridge paths where a simple slip can be dangerous, it is always safer to trek with at least one other person or a guide.
