Permits Required for Nar Phu Valley Trek

To embark on the Nar Phu Valley Trek, trekkers must secure specific permits due to the region’s restricted status and its location within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Here is a detailed breakdown of the necessary permits:

1. Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

The Nar Phu Valley is designated as a restricted area by the Government of Nepal, Nepal Immigration rules.. Trekkers must obtain a RAP, which is only issued through a registered trekking agency. Solo trekking is not permitted; a minimum of two trekkers accompanied by a licensed guide is mandatory.

2. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Since the Nar Phu Valley lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, an ACAP is required. This permit supports conservation efforts and sustainable tourism in the region

3. Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card

While a TIMS card is generally required for treks in Nepal, it is not mandatory for the Nar Phu Valley Trek due to the necessity of the RAP, which includes similar information. However, if you plan to extend your trek to include the Annapurna Circuit or other regions, a TIMS card may be necessary.

Note: Before beginning your journey, you must get a Nar Phu Valley Trekking Permit in either Pokhara or Kathmandu. If you purchase it while passing through checkpoints, you will be charged twice the price.

Comprehensive Nar Phu Valley Trek ( Kangla Pass )

The Nar Phu Valley Trek via Kang La Pass is one of Nepal’s most unique and remote trekking adventures, perfect for experienced hikers seeking a raw Himalayan journey off the beaten path. Tucked away in the northern part of the Annapurna region, near the Tibetan border, this hidden trail leads to the secluded villages of Nar and Phu—untouched by modern life and rich in ancient Tibetan culture. Combining dramatic alpine scenery, spiritual encounters, and the thrill of high-altitude trekking, this route has become a dream for those wanting to explore less-crowded trails in Nepal.

Beginning with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, and then on to Koto, the trek enters the restricted Nar Phu Valley, accessible only with a special permit. From there, the trail winds through deep gorges, dense pine forests, suspension bridges, and high mountain passes. Trekkers soon arrive in Phu Village, home to traditional stone houses, yak herders, and one of the region’s oldest Buddhist monasteries—Tashi Lakhang Gompa, listed as one of the 108 great Buddhist monasteries in the world. Along the route, the barren highlands and Himalayan vistas reveal spectacular views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and more.

The cultural experience deepens as you continue on to Nar Village, known for its strong Tibetan roots and dramatic high-altitude setting. The ultimate challenge and reward of the trek is the crossing of Kang La Pass (5,306 meters), a stunning mountain saddle offering sweeping views over the Annapurna range and into the Marsyangdi Valley. From there, you descend to Ngawal, a picturesque village on the Annapurna Circuit, before driving back to Kathmandu.

This 12-day itinerary includes visits to remote villages, spiritual sites like Praken Gompa and Chongar View Point, and offers rare insight into Tibetan Buddhist culture in Nepal. The trek is considered challenging and is best suited for physically fit hikers with prior trekking experience. Accommodations along the route include teahouses, lodges, and monastery guesthouses, providing a fully immersive Himalayan experience.

The best seasons to do the Nar Phu Valley Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when weather conditions are stable and mountain views are at their clearest. Trekkers are required to obtain both the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), and must travel with a licensed guide and registered agency.

Guided Package Information of Nar Phu Valley Trek ( Kangla Pass )

Best Season

The best time to embark on the Nar Phu Valley Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In spring, the trails are lined with blooming rhododendrons, the air is crisp, and the days are pleasantly warm. Autumn brings clear skies, excellent visibility, and comfortable trekking conditions—ideal for crossing high passes like Kang La (5,306 m) and soaking in views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. These seasons also offer the best opportunity to explore the high-altitude villages of Nar and Phu without weather-related interruptions.

Trekking Duration & Difficulty

The Nar Phu Valley Trek takes 12 days and is considered challenging due to its remote location, high altitude, and long walking days. The trek reaches a maximum elevation of 5,306 meters at Kang La Pass, making it suitable for trekkers with prior high-altitude experience or good physical fitness. While technical climbing isn’t required, trekkers should be prepared for steep ascents, rocky terrain, and the thinner air at higher elevations. Mental endurance and a spirit of adventure are essential for this off-the-beaten-path journey.

Transportation

Your journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, followed by a private jeep ride to Koto, the gateway to the Nar Phu Valley. After the trek, you’ll return to Besisahar and then drive back to Kathmandu by tourist bus. All ground transportation—including airport transfers—is arranged by our team to ensure a smooth, stress-free experience throughout the trek.

Typical Daily Schedule

Most trekking days begin around 6:30 to 7:00 AM with a hearty breakfast. You’ll walk for about 5 to 7 hours daily, depending on the terrain and altitude. Lunch is served at teahouses or scenic trail spots, while evenings are spent in local lodges or monastery guesthouses. Each day offers a blend of nature, culture, and spiritual encounters—from visiting ancient monasteries like Tashi Lakhang to witnessing yak caravans and highland farming life.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation during the trek is in simple teahouses, lodges, and monastery guesthouses, offering basic but comfortable shelter. Rooms usually have twin beds with shared bathrooms. Meals include warm, freshly cooked Nepali and Tibetan dishes such as dal bhat, thukpa, momos, and yak butter tea. We ensure the food is hygienic and energy-rich to support your trek in high altitudes.

Permits & Entry Fees

Since Nar and Phu are located in a restricted area, special trekking permits are required. We will handle all permit arrangements on your behalf. The package includes the cost of:

  • Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
