Guided Annapurna North Base Camp Trek Package Information

Best Seasons for Trekking

The North Annapurna Base Camp (NABC) trek is best experienced during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November).

  • Spring: Offers a vibrant display of rhododendron forests and wild flora.

  • Autumn: Provides the clearest mountain views, crisp blue skies, and stable weather, which is crucial for the camping nights at Pancha Kunda Lake.

A Typical Day on the Trail

Days generally begin with breakfast around 7:00 AM, followed by 6–8 hours of trekking. On the lower trails, you will stay in comfortable teahouses or hotels. However, on Days 03, 04, and 05, you will experience high-altitude wilderness camping. Lunch is provided along the trail, and evenings are spent at the campsite or lodge enjoying a warm dinner and brief briefings for the next day’s journey.

Transportation & Logistics

The journey provides flexibility with both driving or flying options between Kathmandu and Pokhara. The trek’s off-road portion begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Humkhola via Tatopani. Please note that mountain road conditions can be unpredictable; we utilize reliable 4WD jeeps for the off-road segments to ensure safety and comfort.

Trek Difficulty & Fitness

This is a moderate to challenging trek. While the altitudes reached (4,190m) are lower than Everest Base Camp, the terrain near Humkhola and Busket Mela can be steep and rugged. We recommend a basic level of physical fitness and prior hiking experience to fully enjoy the remote beauty of the North Annapurna region.

Accommodation & Meals

This package features a hybrid of standard hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, teahouses in Tatopani, and full-service camping (including tents and mattresses) at Busket Mela and Pancha Kunda Lake. Nutritious meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) are provided throughout the trekking days.

FAQs

What is the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek?

It is a remote, off-beaten trekking route in Nepal’s Myagdi district. Unlike the traditional ABC, this trail leads to the north face of Mt. Annapurna I, offering a raw, wilderness experience away from the heavy commercial crowds.

Where is Annapurna North Base Camp located?

Situated in the Myagdi district, North ABC lies at the foot of the Annapurna Massif’s northern face. It is positioned north of the standard Annapurna Base Camp and is typically accessed via the village of Narchyang near Tatopani.

What is the altitude of Annapurna North Base Camp?

The Annapurna North Base Camp is located at an elevation of approximately 4,190 meters (13,746 feet). Reaching this altitude requires proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding 8,000-meter peaks and glaciers.

What is the difference between ABC and North ABC?

The traditional ABC is a well-trodden tea-house trek on the south side. North ABC is a remote, mostly camping-based trail on the north side. It follows the historic 1950 Maurice Herzog route, offering significantly more solitude and ruggedness.

How long does the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek take?

Depending on your starting point, the trek usually takes between 5 to 10 days. Short itineraries focus on the core trail from Hum Khola, while longer versions include travel from Kathmandu or Pokhara and essential acclimatization days.

What is the difficulty level of the North ABC trek?

This trek is considered moderately challenging to difficult. It features steep ascents, rocky terrain, and high altitudes. Since it is less commercialized, trekkers should be in good physical condition and prepared for a raw, wilderness camping experience.

What is the Maurice Herzog Trail?

Named after the French mountaineer who first summited Annapurna I in 1950, the Maurice Herzog Trail is the historic path leading to North ABC. It is a legendary route that highlights the pioneering spirit of early Himalayan exploration.

When is the best time for the North Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The ideal times are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies for mountain vistas, and moderate temperatures. Winter is too cold, and Summer brings heavy monsoon rains.

Do I need permits for the North ABC Trek?

Yes, you require two main permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and the Trekkers’ Information Management Systems (TIMS) card. These are essential for legal entry and to support conservation efforts within the Annapurna region.

How do I reach Annapurna North Base Camp?

Most trekkers drive from Pokhara or Beni to Narchyang or Hum Khola. From Hum Khola, the trail follows the Maurice Herzog route through remote forests and alpine pastures, passing the beautiful Panchkunda Lake before reaching the base.

Can I see Annapurna I from the North Base Camp?

Absolutely. North ABC provides an incredible, close-up view of the massive North Face of Annapurna I (8,091m). You also get spectacular vistas of Mt. Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, and the sprawling glaciers that define this rugged landscape.
