Planning a Mountain getaway like a well-kept secret? Welcome to the Tsum Valley Trek, a hidden 16 days up to the high mountains of the Manaslu region, a sacred land. You will abandon the teeming tourist trail and enter an unobtrusive realm of snowy peaks and old Buddhist heritage.

Tsum Valley, called “Hidden Valley of Happiness”, offers a special trekking experience. The snug villages are sheltered by high stone walls, and prayer flags flutter in the cold wind. The huge summits of the Ganesh Himal guard over you as you ascend. You will cross the old suspension bridges, pass through forest of green pine, and hear the running of stream Budhi Gandaki River.

This trek is much more than a physical challenge. It is a walk through a living museum where you visit places most travellers never see. From the ancient Mu Gompa sitting high in the clouds to the famous Milarepa Cave, every day brings a new surprise. If you want a fun cultural trip mixed with huge mountain views, pack your bags for this great adventure.

What to Expect on a Tsum Valley Trek

When you book this package, prepare yourself for quiet trails and untouched beauty. You will spend 16 days walking through dramatic river gorges and high mountain passes. In the first few days, you will walk through warm weather and green hills around Machha khola and Jagat. As you climb higher toward Chumling and Nile, the air gets colder and the scenery changes to a harsh, rocky desert.

You will sleep in basic but cozy teahouses run by welcoming local families. Because this is a restricted area, you will notice very few foreign trekkers. The path requires a good level of fitness, but our slow and steady pace keeps you safe from altitude sickness.

People and Religion in Tsum Valley

Local Tsumba people practise a pure form of Tibetan Buddhism. Their tradition is known as Shyagya, which is strictly adhered to. It is the ban on all hunting, animal slaughter and forest fires within the valley. These protect all life forms, and the opportunity to see rare wildlife, such as Blue Sheep or Bharal and Himalayan Thar, roaming freely about the trails. In everyday life here, religion is the key. Local people will be spinning prayer wheels and carving mantras on stone walls and dedicated to the spirits of the mountain. They’re like family to visitors, and you’ll find it in no time.

The Main Attractions of Tsum Valley

This walk is made extra special by the cultural sites. Among the highlights of your tour is a visit to Mu Gompa, the highest and most remote monastery of the region, which is located at 3700m. One of the highlights is the visit to the Milarepa Cave as well. This is the very place in which a well-known 11th century Buddhist Saint meditated.

The trail also provides breathtaking vistas of the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal and Boudha Himal mountains. Even you will have the opportunity to dip your swollen muscles into the natural hot springs of Khorlabesi. There’s a beautiful piece of history at every corner of this valley.

Permits and Regulations

  • Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Special permit required to enter the protected Tsum Valley. It is USD 40 per person for the first seven days in the high season of fall.

  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): This permit gives you legal entry into the regional conservation area. It costs approximately USD 23 (NPR 3,000) per person.

  • Local Village Government Fee: The local municipality collects a small fee of NPR 2,000 per person directly in the region. This money stays in the community to help fix walking trails and maintain old monasteries.

  • Mandatory Local Guide Rule: Walkers are not allowed to walk independently in this protected area. All tourists are required by the government to hire a licensed local guide who is licensed.

Best Trekking Seasons

  • Autumn Season (September to November): This season gives you crystal-clear mountain views and very stable, pleasant walking weather.

  • Spring Season (March to May): You experience warmer temperatures during the day, and are greeted with colourful, blooming rhododendron on the Forest trails.

  • Monsoon Season (June to August): We avoid these summer months because heavy rains make the steep trails slippery and hide the mountain peaks behind thick clouds.

  • Winter Season (December to February): Trekking remains possible, but freezing temperatures and heavy snow can block high mountain paths and make the journey tough.

Difficulty and Fitness

It is a challenging trek which involves walking up to 7 hours daily on steep, rugged paths, so some fitness is essential. The height will be above 3,700 meters, so you should be used to hiking or running your legs beforehand.

The path is not technical and will not involve ropes. All that is necessary is willpower, a positive attitude and a healthy heart to accomplish this spectacular high-altitude stroll.
