The Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is a captivating 13-day expedition that takes you through the breathtaking landscapes of the Annapurna region, making it one of Nepal’s premier trekking experiences. This trek offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and a moderate level of challenge, making it a favorite among trekkers.

Annapurna, standing at 8,091 meters (26,545 feet), is the 10th highest mountain in the world. It is part of the Annapurna Massif, a range that includes iconic peaks such as Annapurna I, II, III, IV, and the distinctive Machapuchare, also known as Fishtail. The trek takes you through villages inhabited by various indigenous ethnic groups, including Ghorepani, Ghandruk, Chhomrong, and Landruk.

These areas are home to a rich cultural diversity, with people from different backgrounds such as Ghale, Gurung, Magar, Thakali, and Tamang, each contributing their own language, customs, and traditions. During the trek, you will ascend to a maximum altitude of 4,130 meters at Annapurna Base Camp, where you’ll be surrounded by towering peaks and glaciers. The region also falls within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), a sanctuary for rare wildlife and exotic bird species. If you’re fortunate, you might catch a glimpse of elusive animals like the snow leopard, musk deer, or Himalayan Tahr.

Ghorepani, the gateway to Poon Hill, is a charming village where trekkers can immerse themselves in local culture and enjoy the vibrant rhododendron forests that bloom in spring. The combination of these iconic locations enhances the trekking experience, offering both natural beauty and cultural richness along the way. Towards the end of the Poonhill trek, you can unwind by soaking in the natural hot springs of Jhinu Danda, offering a relaxing finish to this unforgettable adventure.

The highlight of the early part of the trek is Poon Hill (3,210 m)—a famous viewpoint offering panoramic sunrise views over Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and other Himalayan peaks.

From there, the trail continues toward Chhomrong, Bamboo, and Deurali, eventually leading you into the stunning Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). Along the way, trekkers get the chance to experience warm hospitality from local communities and gain insight into Gurung and Magar cultures.

While the ABC trek is not as high or as remote as other Himalayan routes, it still requires good physical fitness and preparedness for long trekking days. The trail involves numerous stone staircases and moderate altitude gain, making it ideal for those who want a rewarding Himalayan experience without venturing into extreme terrain.

The best seasons for this trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the skies are clear, the temperature is pleasant, and the mountains are fully visible.

FAQs

What is the total distance of the ABC Trek via Poon Hill?

The trek covers approximately 110–115 km (68–71 miles). This classic route includes the detour to Poon Hill, adding extra mileage but rewarding you with the best sunrise views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs.

How many hours will I walk each day?

On average, expect to walk 5–7 hours daily. Some days, like the hike from Ghorepani to Tadapani (including the sunrise hike to Poon Hill), may feel longer due to the early start and significant elevation changes.

What is the best season for this trek?

Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) are ideal. Spring offers blooming rhododendrons and stable weather, while Autumn provides the crispest, clearest mountain views. Winter and Monsoon are possible but much more physically demanding due to snow or rain.

Which permits are required, and how do I get them?

You need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS Card. These cost roughly $50 USD total. If you book with us, we handle all the paperwork in Kathmandu or Pokhara so you can focus on the trail.

Is it mandatory to hire a guide for ABC?

As of April 2023, the Nepal Tourism Board requires all foreign trekkers to hire a licensed guide for safety. This helps with navigation, emergency response, and provides rich cultural insights into the Gurung and Magar communities.

How difficult is the ABC Trek via Poon Hill?

It is classified as “Moderate.” While it doesn’t require technical climbing, the thousands of stone stairs (especially at Ulleri) and the altitude above 4,000m make it physically taxing for those without basic cardiovascular fitness.

Is altitude sickness (AMS) a serious risk?

Yes, AMS can occur above 2,500m. Since ABC sits at 4,130m, we design our itineraries with gradual ascent. We recommend drinking 4 liters of water daily, avoiding alcohol, and notifying your guide immediately if you feel dizzy or nauseous.

What fitness level do I need?

You should be able to walk 10–12 km per day with a light pack. We recommend 4–6 weeks of pre-trek training, focusing on stair climbing, jogging, or hiking to build endurance for the steep Himalayan terrain.

Can children or seniors do this trek?

Yes, the trail is well-trodden and accessible. We have successfully guided trekkers from age 8 to 70. However, children and seniors require a slower pace and extra acclimatization days to ensure safety and enjoyment.

Is travel insurance mandatory?

Absolutely. Your policy must specifically cover high-altitude trekking (up to 5,000m) and emergency helicopter evacuation. Medical costs and rescue flights in the Himalayas are extremely expensive without proper insurance coverage.

What is "Teahouse" accommodation like?

Teahouses are mountain lodges offering basic twin-sharing rooms. While simple, they provide a cozy atmosphere and communal dining halls. Expect shared bathrooms at higher altitudes; hot showers are usually available for a small extra fee.

What kind of food is available on the trail?

The menu is surprisingly diverse, featuring the famous “Dal Bhat” (lentil soup and rice), pasta, momos, and pancakes. We recommend a vegetarian diet at higher altitudes to avoid digestion issues caused by meat transported long distances.

Is safe drinking water available?

You can buy boiled water or filtered water at teahouses. To be eco-friendly and save money, we recommend carrying a reusable bottle and using purification tablets or a Steripen to treat tap or spring water.

Can I charge my phone and camera?

Yes, most teahouses offer charging stations in the common area for a fee (approx. $2–$5). As you go higher, solar power is used, so bring a high-capacity power bank to ensure your devices stay charged.

Is there Wi-Fi on the trek?

Wi-Fi is available in most villages for a fee, but it becomes very slow and unreliable as you climb higher. We suggest buying a local Ncell or Nepal Telecom SIM card for better data connectivity in lower regions.

Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag?

While teahouses provide blankets, they may not be enough for the freezing nights at ABC. We highly recommend a 4-season sleeping bag (rated -10°C or lower) for hygiene and guaranteed warmth during the winter months.

What are the must-pack items?

Essential gear includes broken-in trekking boots, a down jacket, moisture-wicking layers, a headlamp, and trekking poles. Poles are especially vital for protecting your knees during the long, steep descents on stone staircases.

Can I store my extra luggage?

Yes, you can leave your suitcase or non-trekking clothes at your hotel in Kathmandu or Pokhara for free. Most trekkers carry only a 30–40L daypack, while a porter carries the heavier duffel bag.

How much extra cash should I bring?

Budget $25–$35 per day for “extras” like hot showers, Wi-Fi, charging, snacks, and tips for your guide and porter. There are no ATMs on the trail, so withdraw enough Nepali Rupees in Pokhara before starting.

What makes the "Via Poon Hill" route better?

Standard ABC treks skip Poon Hill to save time. However, the Poon Hill route offers a 360-degree panorama of 14 peaks and better acclimatization, making your arrival at the Base Camp much more comfortable and scenic.
