Comprehensive Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek Guide

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Nepal, combining the rugged beauty of the Manaslu Circuit with the sacred, hidden Tsum Valley. This trek offers breathtaking views of Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), Ganesh Himal, and the Shringi Himal range while taking trekkers through remote villages influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. The journey follows the Budhi Gandaki River, passing through lush forests, terraced fields, and dramatic gorges before reaching the high-altitude landscapes near the Tibetan border.

Tsum Valley, known as the “Valley of Happiness,” is a culturally rich region with ancient monasteries like Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa, traditional chortens, and prayer walls. The valley has preserved its Tibetan Buddhist heritage for centuries, with friendly locals who still practice unique customs. Unlike the more commercialized trekking routes in Nepal, Tsum Valley remains a peaceful sanctuary for spiritual seekers and nature lovers.

The trek is moderately challenging, requiring good physical fitness as it includes several high-altitude passes, such as Larkya La Pass (5,106m). The best seasons to embark on this journey are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is stable and the views are spectacular. Trekkers need a special restricted area permit for both Manaslu and Tsum Valley, and it is mandatory to trek with a registered guide or in a group.

With its unique blend of dramatic landscapes, Tibetan culture, and untouched wilderness, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is an incredible alternative to the crowded Everest and Annapurna regions. This trek promises a rewarding experience for those seeking adventure, cultural immersion, and a deep connection with the Himalayas.

Guided Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek Package Information

Best Seasons

The best times for the Manaslu Circuit & Tsum Valley Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and lush green landscapes, while autumn offers clear skies and stunning mountain views after the monsoon. These seasons provide stable weather, moderate temperatures, and the best trekking conditions.

Typical Day

A typical day starts with breakfast around 7:00 AM, followed by 5-7 hours of trekking with a lunch stop at a teahouse along the way. Trekkers usually reach their next destination in the late afternoon, leaving time for relaxation, acclimatization, or exploring nearby monasteries and villages. Evenings include dinner and a briefing for the next day’s trek.

Flight Delays & Transportation

There are no flights involved in the Manaslu Circuit & Tsum Valley Trek, as it starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola or Machha Khola. However, road conditions can be unpredictable, especially during monsoon season, potentially causing delays. It’s recommended to have buffer days in your itinerary.

Visa

A Nepal visa can be obtained on arrival at Kathmandu Airport. The fee is $30 for 15 days and $50 for 30 days. Bring passport-sized photos and USD cash for a hassle-free application.

Travel Insurance

Trekkers must have mandatory travel insurance that covers trekking above 5,000m, including emergency helicopter evacuation. It is crucial due to the remote nature of the trek and limited medical facilities in high-altitude areas.

Currency Exchange

Major currencies can be exchanged in Kathmandu, but ATMs are not available along the trekking route. It’s best to carry enough Nepali rupees for personal expenses, as teahouses accept only cash.

Extra Expenses

Plan for $25-30 per day for extra costs such as hot showers, charging electronic devices, WiFi, snacks, and meals not included in the package. Donations at monasteries and occasional transport costs should also be considered.
